I was told that Encore Autumn Embers and Autumn Princess azaleas were new hardy azaleas and could take mostly sun. Several of them are shriveling up and loosing their leaves. What do I need to do to keep them alive?

Azaleas will not tolerate long periods of full sun for the most part. As a group, the Encore Azaleas will probably tolerate more than other types, but they should not be planted in an area of "mostly sun." Feed Azaleas with an Azalea fertilizer and use products like the aluminum sulfate to keep the soil acidified. If you have a sandy soil, it is possible that the acidity is already OK so the aluminum product may have caused the burning.
