Crinum—another Southern classic
This reliable beauty is a must-have!
We recently extolled the virtues of Red Spider Lily—the ultimate “surprise” lily for the South. It immediately brings to mind another classic Southern bulb: Crinum.
My grandmother had Crinum growing in her garden—not that she got to enjoy it very long. The minute the flowers were fully opened, my friends and I began to pluck them to create “wedding bouquets.” (Which we held together with trash-bag twist ties and scraps of yarn. Score one for childhood ingenuity!)
But, really, how could we resist? Crinum is absolutely beautiful, yet tough enough to thrive in less-than-ideal conditions. Plus there’s that light, sweet fragrance!
Whether it’s for nostalgia or child’s play, you ought to add some Crinum to your garden!
We’ve got some bulbs coming to a Calloway’s or Cornelius Nursery location near you. Our friends at The Southern Bulb Co. have sent over large clumps of Crinum 'Summer Nocturne'; each has several small bulbs within. Plant them as-is to hasten an established look and allow for multiple blooms next year. Cost? Only $18 for a lifetime of enjoyment. Can’t go wrong with that.
We know you’ll admire this Southern classic. (That is if the kids don’t get to it first!)
