CALLOWAY'S NURSERY NAMED "PLANT FOR THE CURE" RETAILER OF THE YEAR" FORT WORTH, Texas - February 28, 2001 - Calloway's Nursery has been named "Plant for the Cure Retailer of the Year 2000," announced Kurt Fromherz, program director of Plant for the Cure. The program is a nationwide campaign that raises money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which works to increase awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research. Retail garden centers and growers who participate in the program donate 10 percent of the purchase price on specially tagged plants to the foundation. Since 1998, Plant for the Cure has contributed nearly a quarter of a million dollars to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. "Calloway's Nursery made a company-wide commitment to the program," Fromherz said. "They orchestrated in-store displays rollouts and facilitated employee training, all the time involving key buyers, store managers, department heads, salespeople and cashiers. There was 100 percent support of the program." Calloway's Nursery, the only Metroplex retailer to participate in the campaign, raised nearly $6,300 last year through its sales of Accent Miracle Impatiens, Miracle Mini-Cyclamen and Van Bloem Gardens' pastel tulip mix. Local Calloway's retailers sold nearly 7,000 cyclamen, 550 packages of bulbs and more than 300 impatiens hanging baskets during the three-month campaign. In order to promote the Plant for the Cure program further, Calloway's provided 120 Miracle Mini-Cyclamen at the Susan G. Komen affiliates' annual meeting on Feb. 6. "We are humbled that Plant for the Cure chose Calloway's for such an honor," said John Peters, president of Calloway's Nursery of Texas, Inc. "We've always felt strongly about participating in the campaign because it provides us with an opportunity to join with customers and other garden retailers to build awareness and help fight a disease that affects so many."
