CALLOWAY'S NURSERY SENDS EXCLUSIVE BRONZE STAR ROSE BUSHES TO THE WHITE HOUSE FORT WORTH, Texas March 21, 2001 Eight Bronze Star rose bushes, a variety offered exclusively at Calloway's Nursery, will be shipped to the White House in April as a gift to President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, announced John Peters, president of Calloway's Nursery of Texas, Inc. The amber-orange hybrid tea roses, grown in 3-gallon pots for full root development, will be planted near the Rose Garden, said Dale Haney, chief horticulturist at the White House. Because the Rose Garden is shaded by crab apple trees, the Bronze Star will be planted in containers in order to receive more light. With a repeat blooming habit and a strong, spicy fragrance, the 4- to 5-foot Bronze Star is always with color. The large, amber-orange buds that fade to light apricot stand out against the large, semi-glossy, medium-green leaves. Producing 25 to 29 petals, the globular buds are 6 inches in diameter. The easy-to-grow Bronze Star also is disease resistant with vigorous and uniform vegetation. "We consider it an honor to send a gift from Calloway's to the White House," Peters said. "This rose is beautiful, with brilliant amber and apricot tones, and we hope it will remind the First Family of the Lone Star state." The Bronze Star is available at Calloway's Nursery this season along with many other varieties including the 2001 All-America Rose Selections (AARS), Glowing Peace, Marmalade Skies and Sun Sprinkles. According to Peters, Calloway's will carry the broadest and most varied selection of roses in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, with 40,000 roses arriving in Metroplex stores in late March. Calloway's vast selection includes climbing, antique, mini-tree, groundcover, patented and non-patented, old-fashioned Romantica and Simplicity hedge roses, as well as other modern hybrid roses. Old favorites, such as Queen Elizabeth, Diana Princess of Wales and Peace, will again be available.
