Poinsettia Care Tips
Keep poinsettias in areas with medium
light, where they perform best.
Keep the plants away from full
sun exposure to prevent burned leaves.
Water the poinsettias when the
soil surface becomes dry.
Keep the plant in 60- to 70-degree
temperatures.
A North American Tradition
North America is represented in Christmas legend by only one plant,
the poinsettia. Most of America's Christmas traditions are derived from
the Greeks and Romans, the British and the Norse. Therefore, most of
the plants Americans associate with the holidays, such as holly, ivy,
mistletoe, rosemary, bay and evergreens, come from Europe or the Mediterranean.
Legend of the Poinsettia
According to Mexican legend, a poor child was weeping on her way to
church on Christmas Eve. She was upset because she had no gift to place
before the altar of the Virgin and Child. An angel appeared and instructed
her to gather weeds from the roadside. When the child arrived at the
altar with her wilted offering, starry crimson blossoms burst forth
from every stem. This was the birth of the poinsettia. Calloway's carries
other holiday decorating materials, including seven varieties of cut
green and flocked trees, live trees, wreaths, amaryllis, Christmas cactus
and other gift items.
