In praise of foliage

Showy leaf colors save the day

Looking for the key to gardening happiness? Fall in love with foliage. Yep. It’s that simple.

I’ve learned that admiring flowers alone is both narrow minded and a quick way to grow dissatisfied with your landscape. I strive to have something blooming in my beds each season. But here’s the unvarnished truth: Certain times are better for flowers than others. That’s the way Texas gardening goes.

When flowers aren’t being scene-stealers, foliage gets the chance to take center stage. Caladiums and Hostas add spark and contrast to shady areas. Coleus shows off its awesome colors and versatility. Sweet Potato Vine thumbs its nose at the heat and wows us with an array of foliage hues.

Here’s some foliage worth admiring in my garden right now. The tall Cannas will bloom, eventually. But I’d say the richly colored leaves are the real showpiece. Coleus in different colors and forms surround the Cannas, adding interest.
