Ask the PlantMaster

We have a cottonwood that has what looks like sawdust around the base. I thought woodpecker at first, but it looks like we poured sawdust around it. Any thoughts? We really don't want to lose this tree!

Cottonwoods are susceptible to Cottonwood borers, large beetles that drill holes into the stems to lay eggs. The following link gives you more information that you might find helpful: http://insects.tamu.edu/fieldguide/bimg177.html. If you feel that your Cottonwood has this insect, please contact a certified arborist so that they can help you manage this insect and save your tree.
