We have a huge area under a tree all the grass died off and the tree roots are showing due to dirt erosion.
1. tree is 18 years old
2. grass used to be bermuda under the tree
3. the dirt extends from the tree trunk to the tree drip line
4. the rest of the grass is bermuda
5. the spot under the tree is in shade all the time
6. the dirt erosion is showing the tree roots quite a lot now
7. tree is about 35 feett tall and 25 feet in diameter under the drip lone
If you choose to sod underneath the tree, be sure not to fill more than 2-3 inches of soil on top of the existing soil. Much more than this could damage the tree. Your grass choices include St. Augustine from sod or plugs or Fescue, usually grown from seed.

I have the same similar
I have the same similar problem as this area under the tree does not get any sun. I was thinking of putting some shade loving plants beneath. Am I reading your post correctly in that I can add 2-3 inches of soil and then plant some shade loving plants beneath?
Yes, 2-3 inches of soil added
Yes, 2-3 inches of soil added to the existing soil under the tree is fine, although I would not add any additional soil right up to the base of the tree where the trunk and ground meet.

I have the same problem,
I have the same problem, ground is so dense and hard, and so many roots, I can't dig, even with a pitch fork to turn the ground. Also, sprigs come up from the roots and I can't keep them cut fast enough. Tree was damaged in snow storm 2 years ago, had it cut 'way back (to the trunk), it is coming back vigorously, and is allowing more light to the ground now. what do you suggest?
would love an email... marykaycaddie@yahoo.com

Shade tolerant ground covers
Shade tolerant ground covers such as Mondo, Dwarf Mondo, Hedera, Dwarf Hosta, Vinca Minor, Ajuga or Oxalis would all be good choices for the area you are describing.
