Give a gift that is from the heart with Christmas ornaments made from mini potted plants. This easy-to-make gift idea is the perfect way to bring Christmas cheer to your family or neighbors. Make your own to decorate your Christmas tree or adorn the trees in your Texas yard for personalized holiday décor!
To get started, you will need the following supplies:
- Small terra cotta or plastic pottery
- Mini varieties of seasonal color like poinsettias, succulents, fresh herbs, cyclamen, and more
- Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil
- Spray paint
- Hot Glue
STEP 1: PAINT MINI POTTERY
Choose your pottery. Use a classic terra cotta container or try a plastic variety. Check out the variety of styles from Bloem and keep your plants extra refreshed with their self-watering systems.
Next, it is time to paint. Please use adult supervision when using spray paint. Paint your containers in holidays colors like red and green.
Add additional coats of paint if needed and allow the paint to dry completely. Once the paint is dry, it is time to start creating your ornaments.
STEP 2: CREATE YOUR ORNAMENT
Gather your painted containers and get your ribbon ready. Did you know Cornelius Nursery has a vast selection of holiday ribbon in many different styles and colors? Check out our selection today! Only available in Houston! Find the styles of ribbon that are perfect for your Christmas theme.
Next, you will need your hot glue gun to start gluing the ribbon to each container. Again, please use adult supervision when using hot glue.
First, glue ribbon on both sides at the top of each container to create the “handle” to hook your ornament to the tree.
Next, glue ribbon around the container to cover the end of the handle and help to make it more secure.
Add more ribbon as you wish for an extra touch and pop of color.
Repeat for each container until they are all decorated and ready to hang.
STEP 3: ADD PLANTS
Now it is time to start planting! Make sure everything is dry, from the glue to the paint. Before you add your plant selections, keep in mind where they will be displayed and their sun and water requirements! Plant with Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil to keep your plants healthy and happy.
To plant, fill your container Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil. Make sure to leave room for your plant. Remove the plant from its plastic container and gently break up the root ball. Plant it in the potting soil and water in thoroughly, allowing the water to drain through the container. Add more potting soil if needed.
Poinsettias from Calloway’s and Cornelius Nursery are selected for their unmatched quality! Picked from premium growers to ensure that you receive the best of the best. Poinsettias can be grown indoors or outside and requires little light to flourish. Poinsettias work wonderfully in containers on shady patios and porches, or indoors. Poinsettias require well-drained soil and partial sun during the day. They grow best in cooler temperatures, but bring inside on those cold Christmas nights.
Did you know when you buy a poinsettia, you are helping improve the well-being of kids in need in our communities. At Calloway’s and Cornelius, 10% of all poinsettias purchased will be donated to Lena Pope. For over 90 years, Lena Pope has been investing in the well-being of children now to lead to happy, healthy, and successful adults later. They provide proactive services and support to improve the emotional, behavioral, and intellectual well-being of kids to keep them on a path toward success.
Cool Season Color
For cool season color, choose from varieties like Cyclamen, Matrix® Pansies, or Dusty Miller. Explore all of our selections of cool season color at our store nearest you or online here!
Cyclamen features downward-facing flowers with petals at the ends of the stems. Its bold heart-shaped leaves remain green in color throughout the season. Cyclamen does best in partial shade and prefers evenly moist soil conditions.
Matrix® Pansies are known for their large blooms and consistent growth during the cooler season. They come in bold and vibrant colors in blotch and clear styles! Matrix® Pansies grow quickly and are best planted in partial shade to full sun. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Dusty Miller features soft white fern like foliage with silvery grey hairs. A perfect choice for a frosty touch in a sunny landscape! Dusty Miller prefers full sun and a well-draining soil like Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil.
Choose from our selection of fresh cool season herbs, like rosemary, thyme, basil and more! Your herbs need sunshine to grow and develop their flavor! For herb gardens, plants should be placed in a location that receives 6-8 hours of sun and afternoon shade.
Decorating indoors? Try indoor plants like succulents, cactus varieties, ferns, and more! These are excellent plants for indoor use or outdoor patio areas and prefer partial shade throughout the day.
STEP 4: HANG UP YOUR ORNAMENTS
Now that everything is planted, it is time to hang up your ornaments! Display them on your porch, patio, trees, or Christmas tree!
The bright colors and beauty of the fresh plants will give any space an extra splash of Christmas spirit!
Admire the gorgeous textures and classic Christmas details from each mini potted plant!
