Persimmon Trees are small, easy to grow, and adapted to most of Texas. In the fall, when few fruit crops are ripe, the persimmon produces fruit that is attractive and delicious.

Persimmon Trees are attractive small, to medium-sized trees. The fruits are rich in vitamin A and have more vitamin C than citrus fruit. They are considered a delicacy in the Orient. The wood, which is very hard, is prized by woodworkers and is used to make golf clubs. The tree, its leaves, and its fruit don’t have to be sprayed because they have no serious insect or disease problems. Their bold leaves are dark green all summer, turning to bright shades of red, orange and yellow each fall. Their trunks are gnarly and fissured, adding great character to their surroundings during the winter.

Persimmon Trees, when allowed to develop on their own, grow to 30 to 35 ft. tall and 20 to 25 ft. wide. Depending on the variety, their fruit can be very astringent ("puckerish") until it’s exposed to at least one freeze. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 50 years or more. This plant is typically grown in a designated edibles garden. Persimmon trees need full sun for best growth and fruiting. Water it immediately after planting, and use the excess soil you remove during the digging to make a berm to retain water as you irrigate. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. Persimmon Trees is a good choice for the edible garden, but it is also well-suited for use in conventional landscapes.
