How to Care for Ageratum

Ageratum grows best in full sun to partial shade. It thrives with 4–6 hours of sunlight daily but benefits from light shade in very hot climates to prevent stress.

Plant Ageratum in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 7.0 supports healthy growth.

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly so the soil stays evenly moist, allowing the top inch to dry slightly between waterings.

Feed Ageratum every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a diluted liquid fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can reduce blooms.

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and pinch back leggy stems to maintain a compact, bushy shape.

Ageratum may attract aphids, spider mites, or whiteflies. Overwatering or overcrowding can lead to leaf spot, botrytis, or root rot. Monitor plants closely to prevent issues.

Ageratum is frost-sensitive and usually grown as an annual. In USDA zones 10–11, it may survive as a perennial. Protect plants from frost or grow them in containers that can be brought indoors.
