Aglaonema have been grown as luck-bringing ornamental plants in Asia for centuries. They were introduced to the West in 1885, when they were first brought to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. They have been cultivated, hybridized, and bred into a wide array of cultivars. They live in low-light conditions and are popular houseplants.

This is a relatively low maintenance houseplant. It should only be pruned when it begins to outgrow its container. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Aglaonema range in size from compact, 8-10-inch tall plants to larger varieties that will grow to 18-24 inches tall. It grows at a medium rate. This plant does well in lower light areas, but can tolerate indirect, bright light indoors. It requires an evenly moist well-drained soil for optimal growth, but will die in standing water. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. Aglaonema can be interspecific hybrids or cultivated species.
