First, remove stickers and wipe off your terra cotta planters to ensure the surface is clean and ready for decorating.

free star stencil

Use a stencil to trace the stars on your large terra cotta pot. Create your shapes by outlining a pre-cut paper star, a foam paper crafting star, or use our FREE Star Stencil template. Simply, print and cut out the shapes for a quick and easy homemade stencil.

Space out the stars, tracing them around your patriotic planter. Use different angles for extra visual appeal.

Star-Spangled Container Ideas

Fill in each star outline with your favorite blue paint and allow it to dry completely. If the color is too dark on the planter, add a little white paint to help brighten it up.

painters tape

Next, grab your small terra cotta pot and painter’s tape. Using one piece as the guide for even spacing, tape the stripe pattern around the lip of the planter. This will help you create a clean edge for your stripes.

Paint the exposed areas with red craft paint to create your stripes.

Once you are finished, carefully remove the tape and allow everything to dry.

United we stand! Let’s build our patriotic planter. Fill the bottom of the large pot with garden stones or pebbles. The stones will hold the dowel rod in place and help keep everything stable and secure.

ups a daisy plant insert

Next, place the Ups-A-Daisy® Round Planter Insert above the stones. Ideal for any DIY container garden, this planter insert allows you to use less soil, promotes better drainage, and protects the roots for healthier growth. It also has a convenient hole that is the perfect size for the dowel rod.

dowel rod

Secure the dowel rod into the planter by placing it through the planter insert and into the stones.

Complete your creation by placing the small terra cotta pot on top, make sure the dowel rod is going through the drain hole of your planter to keep it secure. Add some stones to the bottom of the small pot to reinforce the drainage system.

potting soil

Fill your DIY Patriotic Planters with potting soil, leaving room for your plants.

sun-loving color

Begin by planting in the striped pot on top with a mix of red, white, and blue flowers. Find plants with similar sun and water requirements to ensure they stay happy and healthy.

Bedazzle your design with Victoria Blue Salvia. This sun-loving flower sparkles with its vibrant spikes of deep blue flowers. It is heat and drought-tolerant and thrives in our Texas climate.

dusty miller

Complement the height of the Salvia with dynamic Dusty Miller. The striking silver foliage will shine like fireworks in your DIY Patriotic Planter. It is easy to grow and thrives in full sun.

cora vinca

Finish the top planter with Cora® XDR Vinca! This fantastic summer flower is prized for its large and striking blooms. It comes in a variety of stunning hues, but they are most easily recognized and well-known for their “eye” at the center of their flowers.

morning glory

Once the top is complete, add more red, white, and blue flowers in the bottom, large pot. Try Blue My Mind® Dwarf Morning Glory for its trailing growth and true-blue flowers. It thrives in hot weather and provides continuous blooms through the summer.

Zinnias are a great choice for any DIY Summer Planter. Their compact habit and dense foliage make it a great Filler option. Zinnias are fast-growing and low maintenance, providing bursts of blooms throughout the season.

Ignite your Patriotic Planter with fireworks and add Pentas to your creation. Known for their five-pointed, star-shaped bloom, Pentas produce bright, small flowers that are great for attracting pollinators to your garden!

red white blue flowers

Complete your DIY container garden with more Periwinkle varieties! Add Cora® XDR Vinca to your creation for a pop of red and enjoy the adorable blooms of Soiree® Kawaii Catharanthus. It has a compact habit, providing amazing coverage and extra flower power.
