Fall is the perfect time to refresh your porch with warm colors and seasonal charm. As the weather cools and leaves change, a fall container garden adds a cozy, inviting touch to your entryway.
Bold blooms like Pansies and Celosia in decorative pots can instantly boost curb appeal. Container gardening is an easy way to bring vibrant fall color—whether on a small patio or porch.

To get started, gather everything you need. The items you’ll need may vary based on your design, but here are the essentials:

Mixing different sizes adds depth and creates a more dynamic look—start with a large pot as your base, then layer in medium and small containers to build visual interest.

The Accent Pot – Small but Impactful

We began with the smallest container as the first layer in our fall trio. To start, we added in Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil.

For the thriller, we chose a stunning Emerald Colonnade® Holly from Monrovia®, offering rich green foliage and upright structure.

Around the base, we first added Miz America Mustard—its bold, burgundy foliage brings striking contrast and a dramatic pop of fall color.

Next, we layered in Matrix® Pansies, offering cheerful blooms in seasonal shades to brighten the container.

To soften the edges, we included Sweet Alyssum, with its tiny, fragrant flowers and trailing habit that gently spills over the rim.

Though it’s the smallest of the three, this container makes a big impact. The mix of height, color, and texture draws the eye and helps set the tone for the entire display.

It proves that even a compact planter can add major visual interest when thoughtfully designed.

The Supporting Star – Medium-Sized Balance

Next, we moved on to our medium-sized container, the perfect supporting star in our trio. We started by filling it with Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil to give our plants a strong, healthy start.

For the thriller, we chose a striking Butterfly Vine, known for its airy, climbing habit and unique blooms that add height and movement to the arrangement.

Around the base, we layered in a beautiful pink shade of Celosia with its feathery plumes, Matrix® Pansies, and textured Ornamental Cabbage to bring bold color and fall flair.

To finish it off, we added Silver Falls Dichondra as a graceful spiller, with its silvery trailing foliage vines cascading over the edge to soften the container and tie the whole look together.

This combination adds richness and texture, creating a beautiful bridge between the tall drama of the largest pot and the charm of the smaller one.

The Statement Piece – Big, Bold, and Beautiful

Finally, we turned to the largest container, the anchor of our fall display. We began by placing an Ups-A-Daisy® insert inside—this not only reduces the amount of soil needed and improves drainage but also helps lift the plants higher in this taller pot, giving the arrangement added height and presence. Then, we added Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil to prepare the perfect growing environment.

For the thriller, we selected Pink Muhly Grass, with its airy, blush-toned plumes that add stunning height, texture, and a soft, romantic movement to the arrangement.

We began with a classic Mum, adding their full blooms and rich autumn colors.

Next, we added a bold Swiss Chard—an unexpected choice that adds striking texture and color contrast.

To liven things up, we tucked in some Ornamental Peppers with their vibrant, fiery tones.

Silver Dust Dusty Miller came next, softening the mix with its silvery, lace-like foliage and complementing the Silver Falls that we used in the medium sized container.
Sweet Alyssum filled in the spaces with its tiny white blooms and gentle fragrance.
And of course, we couldn’t forget the Matrix® Pansies, adding a cheerful splash of seasonal color to tie it all together.

The mix of foliage textures, vibrant blooms, and cascading spillers make this container a true focal point and ties the entire porchscape together with eye-catching fall charm.

Wrap-Up: Putting It All Together
