Poinsettias are a classic Christmas plant with vibrant, colorful foliage in the shades of the season. Well known for its green and red foliage, but can also bloom in white, pink, and speckled. The star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem; thus, the Poinsettia has become synonymous with Christmas!
As a perennial, it can live well past the holidays and rebloom year after year. Poinsettias can be grown indoors or out and requires little light to flourish. Poinsettias work wonderfully in mass plantings for partial shade landscapes, in containers on shady patios and porches, or indoors for tabletop plants.
Poinsettias require well-drained soil and partial sun during the day. They grow best in cooler temperatures. A slow-release fertilizer will help maintain its vibrant color and allow for better growing conditions. During the warmer months, Poinsettias should be moved indoors and shaded areas, as well as pinched back to help promote re-growth.
