Bulbine, commonly known as Rock Lily, produces airy spikes of star-shaped flowers in warm shades of yellow or orange. Each bloom is accented with delicate, feathery stamens. The foliage is succulent and slender, and forms tidy clumps that remain attractive even when not in bloom.
Exceptionally well-suited for hot and dry conditions, Bulbine is a standout choice for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and low-water landscapes. Its compact, clumping habit makes it perfect for edging pathways, filling in between stones, or softening the front of sunny borders. Bulbine also performs beautifully in containers and mass plantings. Highly attractive to pollintors, Bulbine adds both movement and ecological value to the garden.
Plant Bulbine in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil. The better the drainage, the more Bulbine thrives! Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for spreading clumps. Once established, Bulbine is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. It thrives in heat and humidity and needs very little maintenance beyond the occasional cleanup of spent flower stalks. In warmer climates, Bulbine will often remain evergreen and bloom nearly year-round.
