How to Grow English Thyme
English thyme thrives in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plenty of sunlight helps the plant stay compact and produce the most flavorful leaves.
Thyme grows best in well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. It does not tolerate soggy conditions, so improving heavy clay soil with sand or planting in raised beds helps prevent root rot.
Harvest thyme by snipping the top few inches of stems, leaving some growth on the plant. Regular harvesting encourages bushier plants and continuous new growth throughout the season.
English Thyme tolerates heat well as long as it has excellent drainage and full sun. In extreme summer heat, plants may benefit from light afternoon shade and consistent but moderate watering.
Yes, English Thyme grows very well in containers, raised beds, and herb gardens. Choose a container with good drainage and use Calloway’s Organic Container Potting Soil. Container growing is especially helpful in Texas areas with heavy clay soil.
