Pinata Planters for your Fiesta

SUPPLIES:

crafting supplies

  • Terra Cotta Pottery
  • Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil
  • Spring Plants
  • Colorful Felt Sheets or Tissue Paper
  • Hot Glue
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

STEP ONE:

terra cotta pottery

First, prepare your terra cotta pottery for decorating and wipe off excess soil for a clean surface. Use any size of pottery and choose which will work best for your plant selections.

strips of paper

Next, measure out 1-inch strips on your felt or tissue paper, utilizing the length of each sheet to create long pieces that will wrap around your DIY planter. Carefully, cut each strip with scissors. Be sure to use a range of festive colors for an exciting display. You can also use water-resistant fabric for unique outdoor planters that can withstand the elements longer.

create fringe with felt

Once your pieces are ready, create the fringe by cutting halfway through the width of your strips. For tissue paper, fold each strip in half until you have a 1-inch piece and make the cuts. Felt is too thick to fold, but this method works well with tissue paper and will help you make the fringe quickly and effectively.

STEP TWO:

hot glue

After you have made all your fringe pieces in the different colors, it is time to glue! With adult supervision, add hot glue to the uncut part of each strip, one at a time.

how to create Pinata Planters

Starting from the bottom, line up the first strip so the fringe is level with the base of the terra cotta pot.

Moving up the colorful planter, add the remaining strips, using the top of the fringe cuts to guide your placement.

For larger garden pottery sizes, your strips of paper may not be long enough to wrap around it entirely. Simply, cut smaller pieces to fill in any gaps with each layer.

STEP THREE:

Once your clay pottery is completely decorated, it is time to start planting! Carefully, fill your DIY Piñata Planters with Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil for your gardening success. Our top-of-the-line potting soil is a high-quality blend of organic materials that provides an optimal growing environment for easy-care container plants.
