Grab Your Must-Haves
First, start by picking your pottery—Calloway’s and Cornelius have a wide selection of colors, textures, and sizes to match any room or style. Today’s picks: gorgeous glazed blue ceramic pots with two different textures and styles—just the right touch to add personality to any room.
Once you’ve chosen your favorite pot, grab a bag of Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil to give your new plant the perfect foundation. To keep your plants looking their best, don’t forget to pick up Calloway’s Premium Tropical Plant Food or Bonide® Houseplant Liquid Plant Food—both great options to help your greenery stay healthy and vibrant all season long.
Potting Your Plants
We picked four houseplants in different sizes and varieties to create a fun, dynamic mix. Staggering plants by height adds depth, movement, and visual interest, making your collection feel layered and balanced. Each plant stands out while contributing to a fresh, styled look. It’s easy and fun to pot them up—just a few steps and you’ll have beautiful living art for your space!
Large Houseplant: Sansevieria
We chose a tall, elegant Sansevieria to add height, structure, and vibrant greenery. Large plants like this create a natural focal point, fill empty corners, and bring balance and calm, making any room feel more styled and alive.
Start by adding Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil—just enough to match the size of your plant’s root system. For this one, we only needed a small layer at the bottom.
Gently place your plant into the pot, making sure it’s centered and upright, then fill in around the roots with more soil until the pot is nearly full.
Sansevierias are incredibly low-maintenance plants, making them perfect for busy lifestyles. They thrive in bright to low light and prefer to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common mistake, so it’s best to water sparingly—about once every couple of weeks. With minimal care, your Sansevieria will stay healthy and add a sleek, architectural touch to your space.
Medium Houseplants: Calathea & Kimberly Queen Fern
For our medium-sized houseplants, we first selected a striking Calathea with its bold, patterned leaves and rich green tones. Its vibrant foliage adds the perfect pop of color and texture—making it a standout piece for any tabletop or shelf.
Repeat the same potting process by adding enough soil to the pot so that once the plant is placed inside, the top of its roots sits just below the rim. This ensures proper planting depth for when you top it off with a little more soil for a smooth clean finish.
With its vibrant leaves and moderate size, the Calathea is a versatile plant that brightens any indoor space. It thrives in indirect light and adds lush greenery without needing much sun. Keep the soil moist, not soggy, and maintain humidity with misting or a humidifier to keep it healthy all summer.
For our second medium houseplant, we selected a gorgeous Kimberly Queen Fern.
Kimberly Queen Ferns are the best fern we’ve ever seen and great for indoor and outdoor use. When placed in a decorative pot, their full, feathery foliage adds softness and texture that beautifully complements both modern and classic interiors. Perfect for tabletops, shelves, or plant stands, these ferns create a calming, tropical vibe that enhances your summer décor effortlessly.
These beautiful ferns love humidity and indirect light, making them perfect for bright bathrooms or shaded corners. Keep their soil consistently moist, not soggy and mist the leaves regularly to maintain humidity just like the Calathea.
Small Houseplant: Neanthe Bella Palm
And finally, for our small houseplant, we selected a delicate 4-inch Neanthe Bella Palm. Its graceful, feathery fronds bring a touch of tropical elegance to complete our collection, making it the ideal statement piece for tabletops, desks, or cozy corners.
Simply follow the steps just as you did with the other houseplants. See? It’s very easy once you have the right supplies!
This palm thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers evenly moist soil. Be sure to water when the top inch of soil feels dry but avoid overwatering to keep the roots healthy. With the right balance, your Neanthe Bella Palm will stay lush and vibrant all season long.
Once we finished potting our plants, we gave them a thorough watering to help settle the soil around the roots and give them a refreshing start!
Styling Your Houseplants
To complete our styling, we topped off the plants with some soft Reindeer Moss by SuperMoss®, adding a natural, textured layer that brightens up the soil surface and creates a clean, finished look. This moss not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also helps retain moisture in the soil, making it both beautiful and practical for keeping your plants healthy throughout the summer.
Gently pack it around the base of the plant, covering the soil surface without pressing it down too firmly. This adds a soft, natural texture that not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also gives your houseplants a clean, polished appearance—perfect for tying your display together.
Lastly, we gave the leaves a gentle spray with Green Glo® The Spray on Plant Polish
to enhance their shine and bring out their vibrant colors—finishing touches that make each plant look fresh, polished, and ready to brighten any room.
The best part? No wiping needed! It instantly brings back shine and helps reduce water spots for a gorgeous, polished finish. Just look at those vibrant, glossy leaves!
Styling houseplants with eye-catching pottery and simple finishing touches is an easy, rewarding way to bring summer indoors. Just choose your pots, add quality soil, pick your plants, and finish with decorative moss or polish. It’s a fun and relaxing project—perfect for refreshing your indoor space this season.

To style your houseplants for summer, choose vibrant, colorful pots or decorative containers that complement your home’s aesthetic, as suggested by Calloway’s Nursery. Group plants of varying heights and textures, like trailing pothos or upright fiddle leaf figs, to create dynamic displays. Please place them in bright, indirect light areas, such as near windows, to highlight their lush greenery and add a fresh, summery vibe to your space.
Q: What are the best houseplants for summer indoor styling?
Popular houseplants for summer styling include low-maintenance options like snake plants, ZZ plants, and monstera, as recommended by Calloway’s Nursery. These plants thrive in warm temperatures and add tropical flair. Opt for plants with bold foliage or unique shapes to make a statement, ensuring they suit your home’s light conditions and care routine.
Q: How do I care for houseplants during the summer season?
Summer care for houseplants involves adjusting watering schedules to account for higher temperatures and humidity, as noted in Calloway’s Nursery blog. Check soil moisture regularly, water when the top inch feels dry, and ensure proper drainage. Increase humidity for tropical plants with misting or pebble trays, and avoid placing plants in direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
Q: What are creative ways to display houseplants in summer?
Get creative by using plant stands, hanging planters, or wall-mounted shelves to showcase houseplants, as suggested by Calloway’s Nursery. Mix and match pot styles, like ceramic or woven baskets, for visual interest. Create a focal point by clustering plants in corners or using them as table centerpieces to bring summer energy indoors.
