Tip 1: Check the soil by hand

Letting the soil dry out a bit between waterings is great for encouraging strong roots, but it’s also important to keep moisture consistent. A simple way to check if it’s time to water is to feel the top 3–4 inches of soil—if it’s dry, go ahead and water. If it still feels damp, check back in a few hours. Moisture meters can make this even easier! With a quick check now and then, you’ll get a feel for your garden’s needs and can create a watering routine that works best for your soil.

Tip 2: Water in the mornings or evenings

Watering cool soil decreases the amount of evaporation and allows more water to soak into the ground of your garden.  This also ensures the plants have the water they need before enduring the heat.  Of course, if the soil is dry and plants are beginning to wilt, water them immediately – no matter the time of day.

Tip 3: Water as needed, and deeply

If watered thoroughly, your plants may only need a couple of watering sessions per week depending on how quickly your soil dries.  It is better to give your plants plenty of water intermittently than a little bit every day.

Tip 4: Water all around the base

For healthier, happier plants, water at the base rather than over the leaves—this keeps foliage dry, reduces stress, and encourages better airflow. Early morning watering allows plants to absorb moisture efficiently and stay refreshed throughout the day. Be sure to water evenly around the entire base to support balanced root growth and improve nutrient uptake.

Tip 5: Provide the right amount of water

One of the biggest keys to a thriving summer garden is knowing how much water your plants really need. It’s all about balance. A good rule of thumb for larger plants is the “ten-second rule”: when watering, give each plant a slow, steady drink for about ten seconds at the base. This allows water to soak deeply into the roots, where it’s needed most. Shallow, quick watering often leads to weak root systems and stressed plants. For smaller plants or seedlings, adjust the time accordingly, making sure the top few inches of soil are moist but not soggy.

Tip 6: Supplement your irrigation system

Spray and drip irrigation is great for established plants, but your new plants will need additional water until their root systems develop and extend outside the original root ball. Most irrigation systems don’t provide enough water to fully saturate the root balls and often give a false sense of security. Keep your system on for your existing landscape but focus your attention and hand-watering on your newly installed plants until they are established. Knowing the benefits of hoses, soakers, and sprinklers for your garden will help your landscaping thrive.

Tip 7: Use premium soil and mulch
