Bonsai Chinese Elm

Bonsai Chinese Elm has attractive dark green foliage. Bonsai Chinese Elm can take many forms, but most often is trained as upright and tree-shaped. It is one of the more popular Bonsai subjects.

Bonsai Chinese Elm is a large-growing deciduous tree with many forms from upright to wind-swept. It responds to pruning and shaping and can simulate age with moderate effort. This is a relatively low maintenance tree and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. However, all Bonsai require regular pruning and care to maintain their shape and size. It has no significant negative characteristics. Bonsai Chinese Elm is recommended for formal and informal Bonsai shapes, is suitable for planting as a single plant or in groves, and can simulate age with minimal effort.

Bonsai Chinese Elm can be trained to be just a few inches up to 2 feet tall. Pot size and plant shape will determine the size of plant. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years. This shrub should be grown in full sunlight, but benefits from afternoon shading. It requires moist growing conditions, but will not tolerate any standing water. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, but as a Bonsai subject should never be allowed to dry out. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America. Bonsai Chinese Elm can be grown from cuttings, air layering, and by grafting. All Bonsai require regular pruning and care and an occasional root pruning and re-potting to maintain their shape and character.
