Cinco de Mayo – Celebrating with Plants
Happy May! The weather is getting warmer and the sun is shining! Cinco de Mayo is coming up, so why not spend some time celebrating with your family while enjoying the beauty of nature and plants! Have a family fiesta and decorate together with stylish pottery, edible plants, succulents, cacti, and more! Plus, get creative with free decoration templates that your family can color together, learn how to make a sombrero with pottery, and enjoy tips on planting and design!
First, let’s make things festive with fun Cinco de Mayo décor like Fiesta Flags. There are 3 different styles of flag templates that you can print and your family can decorate.
Color with markers, crayons, pencils, or paint; it is up to you! Make the flags vibrant and colorful to really jazz up your celebration! Depending on the size of the flag banner that you want to make, that will determine how many flags you need to decorate.
When the flags are done, carefully, cut them out and always use adult supervision when crafting with kiddos. You can glue the flags to a piece of poster board for more support or use as is. Have an adult use a hole punch and create holes on the top 2 corners of each flag.
Then, carefully, run string, ribbon, or rope through the holes, one flag at a time. Hang your new Fiesta Flag banner when it is ready to go!
Sombrero Plant Tag
Give your potted plants a little spice with Sombrero Plant Tags! First, color the sombrero to your liking, making a couple different variations to place in your different container gardens!
When you are done decorating, cut out the sombrero. Feel free to glue to a piece of poster board and then, cut it out for stronger support. Then, glue the sombrero securely to a popsicle stick and place in your festive potted plants.
Take your terra cotta pottery to the next level and turn it into a stylish sombrero! When the celebration is over, you can use the saucer and pot as decoration in your home for your indoor plants!
First, paint the rim of the pot with a festive pattern and colors. You may need to add additional layers of paint for a more bold and vibrant color.
Then, paint the saucer. We continued the green color for the saucer to complete the look. Allow everything to dry before putting your sombrero together.
Other Decorative Pottery
For a simple, yet modern look, use color blocking with the other paint colors you used on the sombrero. Just paint the bottom half of your pottery for a pop of color against the natural hue of terra cotta.

When planting herbs, you can usually plant a couple varieties together, depending on the size of your container and if there is room.
Tomato plants and peppers need room to grow. For your Cinco de Mayo fiesta, plant individually in a larger container. As your plants grow larger, it will need to be transplanted to your garden so you can really reap the tasty benefits.
For planting edible plants in containers, you need a good, quality potting soil. Choose Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil for its many benefits like the moisture-retaining capabilities that will keep your plant’s roots happy and healthy. Add the potting soil to the container, leaving room for the plant.
Next, remove your plant from the plastic container and gently break up the root ball. Place in the potting soil and water in thoroughly until the water drains through the plant’s roots and out the drain hole. Add more potting soil if needed.
Succulents and Cacti
A fiesta is not complete without the unique styles and colors of succulents and cacti. They are available in many sizes and varieties for your decorating needs! Call our store nearest you for information on fresh arrivals of these beautiful plants.
When planting succulents and cactus plants, use a potting soil like Black Gold® Cactus Mix. It is made from a unique blend of horticultural grade perlite, pumice, earthworm castings, compost and bark that these plants crave. Plus, it helps provide the ideal soil structure and drainage.
Fill your container with Black Gold® Cactus Mix, leaving room to plant. Add your succulents or cactus selections to the container. Remember, the amount you plant will vary based on the size of the container. Mix these plants together for a desert theme container garden. After you are done planting, water in thoroughly and add more Black Gold® Cactus Mix as needed. Water again when the soil is dry.
