How To Make Living Containers

Go natural and display your plants in a beautiful and inventive way. Living Containers are all the rave and they are so easy to make! Follow these simple steps and you will have a natural oasis of hanging plants in no time!

SUPPLIES:

moss

For this DIY project, you will need the following supplies:

  1. 4 in plant of your choosing (herbs, color, succulents, etc) – use 1 plant per container
  2. Black Gold® Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Plus or Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil mixed with peat moss
  3. Super Moss® Sheet Moss
  4. Floral Wire
  5. Sturdy string or thin rope
  6. Water
  7. Gloves and Hand Shovel

STEP 1: MIX THE SOIL

Let’s get a little nostalgic with this step. Did you ever make mud pies as a kid? Step one is just as fun! Get your potting soil and pour enough it into a bucket to fully cover the plant’s roots. If you are using Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil, use 1/3 potting soil and 2/3 peat moss.

Add enough water to fully moisten the soil and mix with your hand shovel.

STEP 2: PREP YOUR PLANT

Remove your plant from the container. We selected rosemary for its beautiful smell and natural texture that will perfectly complement our Living Containers!

Break up the roots and shake off as much of the soil as you can.

Then, while you hold your plant in one hand, add the new soil mixture to the root ball. Rotate the plant until the root is packed securely with the soil, resembling a softball.

STEP 3: ADD THE SHEET MOSS

Next, grab a piece of sheet moss that is big enough to cover the soil ball that you just created. The moss should reach to the bottom of the plant.

Wrap the moss around the ball and then wrap it with floral wire. The wire should keep the moss secure and hold everything in place.

STEP 4: HANG AND DISPLAY

Finally, attach your hanging cord. You can use sturdy string, rope, etc. Wrap the hanging cord around the plant in the area that will support your Living Container the best and then put it on display!
