How to Prep your Soil for Planting

For your new spring plantings, the most important component to your plant’s success is the soil. Remember, when referencing soil, you will need to amend your soil. Gardening soil was created to provide your plants with the proper nutrients and beneficial ingredients that the roots crave, while also maintaining the correct moisture levels. Good soil is key to the health of your plants. It will also save you time, water, and energy! With quality soil comes less watering, healthier plants, and more time to sit back and admire your creations.

STEP 1: SAFETY CHECK

soil prep

First, your safety is important. Before you move on to the next step and start digging and tilling into the ground, call the city. Have someone come and evaluate your planting area for gas, electrical, and water lines. They should flag and tag all the spots you should avoid.

STEP 2: LET THE TILLING BEGIN

tilling

Once your planting area is clear of debris, rocks, and old plants, let the tilling begin! Till the top layer of existing soil until everything is soft and crumbly. The depth will vary depending on the area.

STEP 3: ADD SOIL

tree and shrub mix

Pick up your bag of Calloway’s Premium Flowerbed Mix or Calloway’s Premium Tree & Shrub Mix and spread at least a 3 inch layer of the soil across the planting area.

Repeat the tilling process to allow for the planting soil to mix with the top soil. This will create the ideal conditions for your plant’s roots.
