Strawberry plants do well in containers, hanging baskets, and vegetable beds. In containers, they will spill over the edge and trail a few inches down the side. In garden beds, they will form a mat with the fruit protected under the foliage. In mild winters, they may be evergreen.

Strawberries prefer well-draining soil rich in compost and should be given enough room for runners to spread. Care should be taken to not plant too deep. the top of the crown should remain above the soil as this is where the leaves and fruit will sprout from. They benefit from regular fertilizing.

How to Grow Strawberries

The best time to plant strawberries in Texas is late winter through early spring (January–March) once the soil is workable. Planting early allows strawberry plants to establish strong roots before warm weather, leading to better flowering and fruit production in spring.

Strawberry plants grow best in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. More sunlight helps plants produce stronger growth, better flowers, and sweeter fruit. If strawberries receive less sun, plants may grow but produce fewer berries. For best results, plant strawberries in a bright garden bed, raised bed, or container where they can receive morning to afternoon sun.

Strawberries grow well both in containers and in garden beds. Containers provide excellent drainage and make harvesting easier, while planting in the ground allows plants to spread and produce more runners. For best results, use well-draining soil and place plants in full sun for at least 6–8 hours daily.

Strawberry plants typically need about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week during the growing season. The soil should stay consistently moist but never soggy. Water more frequently during warmer weather or when plants are producing fruit. Mulch around the plants with Calloway’s Premium Organic Hardwood Mulch can help retain moisture and keep berries clean.

Most strawberry plants begin producing fruit about 4–6 weeks after flowering. Many varieties planted in early spring will start producing berries in mid- to late spring, with harvest continuing for several weeks.
