THE HISTORY OF POINSETTIAS

Poinsettias are a distinctive plant and a popular addition to any holiday décor. They are native to the rocky canyons of Guatemala and Mexico. Poinsettias were cultivated by the Mayans and Aztecs to be used for fabric dye and medicinal benefits.
In the 1600’s, Poinsettias started being associated with the Christmas holiday in southern Mexico. The priests would use the colorful leaves to create gorgeous nativity scenes. Poinsettias were introduced in the United States around 1827 by Joel Robert Poinsett, our nation’s first ambassador to Mexico. As Poinsettias grew in popularity, they were named after him.

Brighten every corner of your home with the vibrant charm of Poinsettias! Their festive colors are perfect for dressing up any space from tabletops and entryways to patios and balconies. Display them in your favorite pottery for a personalized touch or wrap them in shimmering decorative foil for instant holiday cheer.

Our decorative foil wraps come in a variety of classic Christmas colors. At Calloway’s & Cornelius, we have a range of sizes available to fit your 4.5, 6, or 8-inch Poinsettias. Simply slip the decorative foil wrap around the plastic container for easy decorating, gifting, and more!

To plant your Poinsettias in pottery, start with Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil. Fill your container, leaving room for your plant.

Then, take your Poinsettia out of the plastic container. Make a small hole in the potting soil and gently place your plant inside.

Add more potting soil if needed and water thoroughly.
POINSETTIA CARE TIPS

Did you know that Poinsettias are tropical plants? These festive favorites love a touch of sunlight and warmth—just like a little tropical getaway right in your home! While they enjoy bright, indirect light during the day, Poinsettias can also thrive indoors even with limited sunlight. For the best results, place your plant near a sunny window so it can bask in that gentle glow.
Poinsettias feel most comfortable at 65–70°F during the day and slightly cooler temperatures at night. Think of it as their perfect cozy comfort zone!
Watering is key to keeping your Poinsettia vibrant and healthy. When the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch, it’s time for a drink. Just be sure not to overwater—Poinsettias like their soil moist, not soggy.
To keep your plant looking lush and happy, remember these quick tips:
- Keep your Poinsettia away from cold drafts or chilly windows.
- Avoid placing it in areas that are too hot or too dry.
- If the leaves start to droop and the soil feels dry, that’s your plant’s way of saying, “I’m thirsty!”
- For even more vibrant color and lasting blooms, feed your Poinsettia with Calloway’s Premium Tropical Food. Specially formulated for tropical plants, this nutrient-rich blend helps support strong roots, lush foliage, and brilliant holiday color. It’s the perfect way to keep your Poinsettias thriving long after the season ends!
With just a little care and attention, your Poinsettia will stay bright, beautiful, and full of holiday cheer all season long.
