Easy Fall Crafts: Jack O’ Lantern Planters for your Garden Mums
Halloween is around the corner and it is time to have some festive fun with your family. Celebrate together and get crafty for the season! Put on your costumes, make some apple cider, and explore the possibilities with this easy fall craft. Make Jack O’ Lantern Pumpkins with terra cotta pottery for your garden mums!
STEP 1: SUPPLIES
To get started, you will need the following supplies for this fall craft project:
- Terra Cotta Pottery
- Garden Mums
- Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil
- Kid-Friendly Craft Paint
- Paint Brushes and Pencil
- Garden Gloves and Hand Shovel
STEP 2: MAKE YOUR JACK O’ LANTERN FACE
First, wipe off your terra cotta pots for clean painting and figure out the perfect place to paint the face.
Start drawing the eyes, nose, and mouth in your favorite Jack O’ Lantern style. Make the face spooky, silly, or sweet! Try adding eyelashes for a darling touch! Its up to you!
Next, start painting! Dab your paint brush into the black paint and start filling in the different areas of your Jack O’ Lantern’s face.
After you are finished, give the paint a moment to dry and examine if you need to add a second coat of paint.
Once all your Jack O’ Lantern faces are created, allow them to dry completely before starting to plant!
STEP 3: PLANT YOUR GARDEN MUMS
Garden mums are a fall perennial favorite. They add gorgeous cool season color to your landscape and can return year after year. They are a relatively low-maintenance plant and do well in flowerbeds, containers, and mass plantings.
Garden mums prefer full sunlight and can grow to be about 20 inches tall. Garden mums thrive in adverse conditions and do well in cooler weather.

How – To Plant Your Garden Mums in Containers
First, garden mums need a well-draining soil like, Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil. Fill the container with potting soil, leaving room for your plant. Remove your plant from its plastic container and gently break up the root ball.
Add your plant to the container and water in thoroughly, allowing the water to drain through the drain hole. Add additional potting soil if needed.
Water again when the soil feels dry and try watering in the morning to allow the foliage to dry off before nightfall.
STEP 4: DECORATE AND MAINTAIN
Your planters are now complete! It is time to decorate for Halloween! Display each family member’s creation in your yard and admire the playful faces and beautiful colors!
