How to Make a Hanging Basket Container Garden

make your own hanging basket

STEP 1: Supplies

Gather your supplies at our store nearest you. This will vary depending on your personalized creation, but here are the basic items you will need:

  • Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil
  • Fresh plants from Calloway’s or Cornelius
  • Coco Fiber hanging baskets or other hanging basket containers

STEP 2: Soil and Pottery

The soil you use is very important to the health and success of your container garden. First, never use the native soil from the ground, as it does not contain the nutrients and moisture-retaining properties of a proper potting soil.

Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil is perfect for your container garden creations! Our new and improved potting soil helps your plants get the best start for healthier, continued growth. Hanging baskets and container gardens tend to dry out quicker, thus you need a quality soil to help maintain the proper moisture levels.

Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil contains Hydrogel, also known as water holding crystals, to maintain moisture in the soil for your plants to use over time. It contains the necessary organic and beneficial ingredients including sphagnum peat moss, composted rice hulls, composted pine bark, earthworm castings, Dolomite lime, and trace elements. Plus, it is Silicon Enriched™. Silicon has been found to improve drought tolerance, delay wilting, and to help increase stem strength in some crops.

hanging basket options

Pick out your hanging basket container! Explore our coco fiber varieties, wicker baskets, and more! The key is to maintain proper drainage in the container. Coco fiber liners are ideal for hanging baskets because they can hold moisture and release it slowly for better uptake to the plant’s roots. They prevent the soil from drying out too quickly and are extremely porous for better aeration around the plant’s roots.

Fill the container with potting soil, leaving room for your plants.

STEP 3: Adding Your Plants

Pick your plants in vibrant colors to design a visually pleasing container garden. When it comes to the design, use the “Thriller, Filler, and Spiller” method. This will create an exciting design with texture, dimension, and color.

geranium

First, add your “Thriller” plant. Choose selections with big, bold blooms. For our creation, we selected Geraniums. These are a favorite for gardeners for being easy to grow and a dynamic addition to flowerbeds and containers. Remember, the “Thriller” plant will be a large, dramatic, and taller option. It is the focal point in your container. Depending on where your container will be displayed, you can either plant your “Thriller” in the center, or if your container will be viewed from all sides, in the back of the container.

pink and white petunia

Then, add your “Filler” choice. The “Filler” plant is a medium-sized plants that tend to be a more rounded plant to fill out the container look full. Place your “Filler” around the “Thriller” or in front of the “Thriller” plant. In our design, we selected a fantastic plant for this time of year, Petunias and Senator iQ Begonias.

purple and white petunias

Petunias are popular spring plants for their bright, rich, trumpet-like blossoms. With a long flowering period, you can enjoy Petunias throughout the season. They are easy-to-grow and available in a rainbow of delightful colors.

begonias

Senator iQ Begonias are one of the darkest bronze-leaf Begonias you will find, lending to a beautiful contrast between flowers and foliage. They love full sun and do well in sunny gardens.

Finally, add your “Spiller”. “Spillers” are trailing plants that hang over the edge of the container. They should be placed close to the edge of the container, in front of, or surrounding the “Filler” plant.

alyssum

Choose a selection that will spill over the edge of your container with attractive leaves that compliment your creation like Alyssum or Dusty Miller. Alyssum offers clusters of fragrant flowers in white and purple, blooming with a lovely star shape! A great addition to seasonal containers for its compact growth and trailing habit.

dusty miller plant

Dusty Miller offers striking white to silver foliage that can be used as an accent in containers or as a border in garden beds.

Once finished, water in thoroughly. Add more potting soil if needed. Your hanging basket container garden will shine in your space and provide a pop of beautiful, Easter color.
