Landscaping Tips: 5 Great Fall Plants for Spring Blooms

PLANT 1: Little Gem Magnolia Trees

Magnolia Tree

Magnolia Trees are unique and truly beautiful, especially our Little Gem Magnolia Tree! Be entranced by the large, dark green foliage with showy pink pods throughout the fall. Then, let your landscape shine with the stunning and fragrant white blooms in the spring and summer!

The Little Gem Magnolia Tree is a relatively low maintenance plant and only should be pruned after flowering.

When planting, pick a location where your tree will receive partial to full sunlight and make sure it has enough room to grow. Little Gem Magnolia will grow to be about 30 feet tall at maturity with about a 15 foot spread. Avoid any area with standing water, as this plant needs evenly moist, well-drained soil for optimal growth.

Complete the planting with a thick layer of our Calloway’s Premium Mulches around the root zone in the winter to protect the roots so they can establish and stay healthy for a gorgeous spring!

PLANT 2: Purple Spectacular™ ReBloom™ Azaleas

Complete the look of your landscape with masses of purple flowers in the spring, late summer, and fall! The need for color in your landscape won’t be missed with our Purple Spectacular™ ReBloom™ Azaleas!

This multi-stemmed evergreen shrub provides a great contrast to finer plants in your landscape with its texture and low maintenance qualities.

Rebloom™ Azaleas grow with an upright spreading habit of about 2-2.5 feet tall and 2.5-3 feet wide.

While this plant grows at a slow rate, with proper care, it is expected to live for 40 years or more. Think about the potential of continual color every year in your landscape!

Be sure to pick a location that receives morning sun and partial shade throughout the day when planting. This plant enjoys soils that are rich in acidity and well drained. Avoid standing water areas and use our Premium Mulches to protect the roots during the winter!

Purple Spectacular™ ReBloom™ Azaleas are also a great choice for a container garden, but they do require more and frequent waterings.

PLANT 3: Jubilation™ Gardenia

Gardenia

The Jubilation™ Gardenia will remain beautiful throughout the fall and winter with its glossy, green leaves. In the spring and summer, you can enjoy the white blooms that are fragrant and make for perfect cut flowers.

A great choice for attracting bees and butterflies to your yard, the Jubilation™ Gardenia completes any landscape composition and under ideal conditions, it can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.

The Jubilation™ Gardenia also needs to be planted in a location with well-drained soil and should receive full to partial sunlight throughout the day. During the winter, apply a thick mulch around the plant to protect the roots.

PLANT 4: Texas Sage

Texas Sage is always lovely. With its attractive green and silver foliage and smooth gray bark, Texas sage adds an interesting dimension to any landscape all year long. When the weather warms up in spring to mid-summer, the Texas sage produces clusters of showy purple flowers.

Texas sage is best pruned in late winter after the extreme cold has passed and grows at a medium rate. Under ideal conditions, the Texas sage is expected to last for 40 years or more.

Plant your sage in full sunlight. It prefers dry to average moisture and needs a very well-drained soil. Avoid standing water as the Texas Sage is considered to be a very drought-tolerate plant.

Native to North America, this plant is a great choice for xeriscaping or a moisture-conservative landscape.

PLANT 5: Clara Indian Hawthorn

Clara Indian Hawthorn adds an extra element to any landscape. The dark green foliage and glossy oval leaves turn burgundy in the fall and emerges indian red in the spring.

The texture of this shrub adds a fullness to any landscape design. You can balance out the composition by adding additional shrubs or trees that are more pronounced.

Clara Indian Hawthorn is low maintenance and should require minimal pruning. It is also a great source for attracting birds to your yard. They grow to about 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide. If maintained properly, the Clara Indian Hawthorn will live for approximately 20 years.

Plant this fantastic shrub in full sun to partial shade in moist soil. Do not let the soil dry out too much to help ensure the success of your plant.
